Euro 2004

24 June 2004

As England unites and cheers the boys on in Portugal tonight for their match against the host country, our eyes will not just be on the game and number of goals scored but whether this match will top the viewing figures for Monday night’s match when, at it’s peak, just over 20 million individuals watched Wayne Rooney help England beat Croatia 4-2.

Bearing this in mind, we thought it would be interesting to take a look at the viewing figures for Euro 2000 and see, in addition to our patriotic interest in England’s games, how much interest we take in the whole tournament?

The table below shows the top 10 most popular games viewed in Euro 2000 starting at the top.

Unsurprisingly the highest rating matches were indeed the England games, with the most popular match being England v Germany when approximately 17 million individuals watched England beat archrival Germany 1-0. Although England did not feature in the final, our nation of football fans still supported the tournament with approximately 14 million individuals tuning in to see France beat Italy.

Euro 2004 viewing for two of the three England matches already played has surpassed Euro 2000 levels and if the boys win tonight we should expect support for England in this tournament to soar.
